Couple make fresh start thanks to bathroom adaptation
A couple from Cockfosters have been able to bathe properly for the first time in years since a visit from the Occupational Therapy Service revolutionised their bathroom.
Bill and Maureen Turner, who are aged 71 and 70 live in a sheltered housing block managed by Enfield Homes, and have sadly suffered ill health for some time.
Bill was a professional footballer and played for Arsenal in his youth, sadly he broke his back and since then has had to have a number of operations. Maureen has suffered painful arthritis, and because of this both of them have been unable to use a bath.
Maureen said “We moved into our flat from a four bedroomed house, and unfortunately the last tenant was a wheelchair user.
"This meant that the toilet and sink was built very low to compensate. This was bad for us as it meant bending to use it. Also as we were unable to use the bath we had to wash in the sink using a flannel, which wasn’t very good.”
One call to the Occupational Therapy Team soon put that right. An Occupational Therapist came round, and after assessing the couple’s needs and looking at their bathroom, they soon worked out what they needed to bathe properly.
Plans were drawn up and workmen were sent in to begin their work.
Bill takes up the story; he said “The boys who came here were excellent. It was all done in 10 days, and they cleaned up after themselves everyday.
“We now have a special raised toilet and sink which is easy to use, and a wet room so we can sit on a chair and shower easily with our new electric shower, it really is wonderful.
“We cannot fault them, from start to finish everyone has been so efficient and helpful”.
Mike Culligan Director of Housing Operations for Enfield Homes said “During 2007/8 Enfield Council carried out adaptations to 176 properties, and have done a further 216 so far this financial year which is a very significant amount of work.
“These works are crucial as they allow people to remain in their own homes, and make everyday tasks like bathing and going up stairs much easier.
“When works like this take place in the homes of sheltered housing residents and tenants it sees vital teamwork between Enfield Council and Enfield Homes, and the difference is made clear to people like Mr and Mrs Turner.
“Enfield Homes are delighted with the outcomes of their joint working with the Occupational Therapy Service, and pleased that our tenants’ received such good customer service.”
