Condensation and damp
During cold weather, the warm air in your home from cooking, bathing and breathing holds moisture. When this moisture meets a cold surface, it changes into a liquid. This is condensation and it usually happens at night when the temperature drops. You will see condensation as water droplets on walls, window panes, around windows and in the corners of rooms and other areas of poor air circulation. You will often see black mould as well.
To help reduce condensation, you can produce less moisture by:
- drying your washing outside whenever you can. You can also hang it in the bathroom, keeping the door closed and the window open
- never using portable bottled-gas or paraffin heaters. These are not allowed in our properties
- permanently venting your tumble drier to the outside of your home using a suitable kit recommended by the manufacturer
- always covering pans while cooking and not leaving kettles boiling.
You can also help reduce moisture by ventilating rooms while they are in use and by insulating and heating your home.
