Fire safety
If there is a fire inside your home or flat:
- raise the alarm – ensure that anyone in your home knows about the fire and make sure they leave quickly, closing doors behind them. Do not waste time looking for valuables or pets
- close doors – on your way out, only open doors you need to and close any open ones to help prevent the spread of the fire
- stay low – smoke is poisonous. If there is smoke, keep your head as close to the ground as possible. Smoke rises, so the air will be cleaner lower down.
Call 999 and find somewhere safe to wait. When you call 999 you should:
- speak slowly and clearly give the whole address of your home, including the town
- say what is on fire (for example a 2-storey house)
- say whether anyone is trapped and what room they are in. Do not under any circumstances re-enter the building.
If you live in a flat or maisonette and the fire is somewhere else in the building, you will normally be safe if you stay in your flat. Make sure somebody has reported the fire. Close all your windows and doors. If smoke or flames enter your flat before you can do this, leave at once and close all the doors behind you.
Enfield Homes makes regular inspections to ensure landing doors and other fire-safety equipment are in good repair and working properly. However, you can also help us by reporting any necessary repair to us on 0800 40 80 160.
